Best for

Developers building agents that must operate sites with no API — internal portals, legacy dashboards, scraping and form-filling workflows.

Key features

  • Python library that hands an LLM structured control of a real browser
  • Unified interface across OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, MiniMax and local Ollama models
  • Custom tool registration to extend the agent's action space
  • Authentication profiles for reusing logged-in sessions
  • Managed residential proxies and direct/BYO-proxy egress on cloud
  • Parallel cloud sessions (3 concurrent on free, up to 500 on Scaleup)
  • ChatBrowserUse, a model tuned specifically for web navigation
  • Cloud API with per-step billing for lightweight task orchestration

Strengths

  • +Core library is MIT-licensed and free to self-host with no feature gate
  • +Model-agnostic: works with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, local Ollama models or its own tuned model
  • +Very large community (100k+ GitHub stars) means plentiful examples and fast issue turnaround
  • +Cloud tier adds managed proxies, auth profiles and parallel sessions without rewriting agent code
  • +Transparent published usage rates for browser hours, proxy bandwidth and tokens

Weaknesses

  • −Web agents remain inherently brittle — layout changes, bot detection and slow pages cause failures
  • −Python-first and developer-oriented; there is no meaningful no-code path
  • −Cloud costs stack (subscription + browser hours + proxy GB + token markup) and are easy to underestimate
  • −Fast-moving API across V2/V3/V4 generations means integrations need maintenance

Overview

Overview

Browser Use is an open-source Python library, founded in 2024 by Magnus Müller and Gregor Zunic, that gives an LLM agent structured control of a real browser. Instead of scraping HTML or calling an API that may not exist, the agent perceives the page, decides on an action — click, type, scroll, extract — and executes it, which makes it usable against sites that were never designed for programmatic access. The project is MIT-licensed and has become one of the most widely adopted browser-automation libraries in the agent ecosystem, with well over 100,000 GitHub stars.

The library is deliberately model-agnostic. A single interface covers OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and MiniMax models, local models through Ollama, and ChatBrowserUse — the company’s own model tuned for web navigation. That flexibility is the main cost lever: teams can run cheap models for simple flows and reserve frontier models for pages that need real reasoning.

Revenue comes from Browser Use Cloud, which runs the same agents on hosted infrastructure with managed proxies, saved authentication profiles and high session concurrency. Pricing is a subscription that converts to credits, plus published usage rates — $0.02 per browser-hour, $5/GB for managed residential proxies, and token pricing at a markup over provider rates (or a 0.2× orchestration fee if you bring your own key). It is transparent but additive, and real bills depend heavily on how long tasks run. The honest caveat for any tool in this category is reliability: agents driving live websites still fail on layout changes, bot detection and timing, so production use needs retries and monitoring.

Key Benefits

  • No API required: Automates internal portals, legacy dashboards and third-party sites that expose no programmatic interface.
  • Genuinely open: The MIT core is fully functional self-hosted, so the cloud is a convenience rather than a paywall.
  • Cost control through model choice: Swap between cheap and frontier models per workload instead of being locked to one vendor’s pricing.
  • Scales without a rewrite: The same agent code runs locally or against hundreds of concurrent cloud sessions.
  • Large community: A very active repository means most integration problems already have a documented answer.

Use Cases

  1. Data extraction from non-API sources — Pull structured records out of supplier portals, government registries or dashboards that offer no export.
  2. Automated form filling and submissions — Complete repetitive applications, listings or internal request forms with authentication profiles preserving login state.
  3. QA and regression checks on web flows — Run natural-language test scenarios against staging environments and report where the flow breaks.
  4. Research and monitoring at scale — Fan out hundreds of parallel cloud sessions to track pricing, availability or content changes across many sites.
