Grok Build is xAI's terminal-based coding agent. It runs as a full-screen terminal UI that reads your codebase, edits files, executes shell commands, searches the web and manages long-running tasks, and it can also be run headlessly for scripts, bots and CI or embedded inside editors through the Agent Client Protocol. The source is published under the Apache 2.0 licence on GitHub, and the repository now sits under the SpaceXAI name after xAI's corporate reshuffle.
It was in beta from early June 2026 and xAI declared version 1.0 on 7 August. The 1.0 changelog is mostly stability work (session flow, error handling, markdown rendering, a streaming JSON output for headless use) plus a useful /undo command. Its most distinctive design choice is that parallel sub-agents each get an isolated git worktree, which is a cleaner answer to concurrent edits than sharing one working tree.
Honestly, it is a late entrant into a crowded category. Claude Code and Codex have been generally available for over a year with larger user bases and more third-party tooling, and Grok Build's reliability record is measured in weeks. Access is also bundled into consumer subscriptions rather than sold on its own, and xAI has not published itemised usage limits, which makes value hard to judge. The open-source licence and scriptability are real advantages for teams who want to inspect or customise their agent.
Key Benefits
- Open and inspectable: Apache 2.0 source means you can audit behaviour and change configuration, including custom models.
- Safer parallelism: Sub-agents in separate git worktrees reduce merge conflicts during multi-task runs.
- Fits existing workflows: Terminal, CI and editor (ACP) use from the same tool.
- Easy rollback:
/undoreverts files and chat state together.
Use Cases
- Terminal-first feature work — Plan and implement changes in an existing repository from the command line.
- CI automation — Run the agent headlessly with JSON output in pipelines and bots.
- Parallel refactors — Split independent tasks across sub-agents in separate worktrees.
- Editor integration — Drive the agent from an ACP-compatible editor.
