Natural Raises $30M Series A to Build a Payment System Made for AI Agents
Fintech startup Natural closed a $30 million Series A led by Forerunner Ventures to build payment infrastructure designed for autonomous AI agents rather than humans, setting up a direct challenge to Stripe.
Fintech startup Natural has raised a $30 million Series A led by Forerunner Ventures, whose founder and managing partner Kirsten Green led the investment. The round brings Natural's total funding to $40 million, following a $9.8 million seed round the company disclosed last October.
Payments built for machines, not people
Natural was founded by CEO Kahlil Lalji alongside co-founders Eric Wang and Walt Leung. Lalji previously built Ivella, a YC-backed banking product for couples that sold to Earnin in 2023. His pitch for Natural is that today's payment rails — cards, invoicing, dispute handling — were all designed around a human clicking "buy," an assumption that breaks down as AI agents start initiating, negotiating and settling transactions on their own.
"It just feels obvious that agentic payments are going to be structurally the most important problem in the space," Lalji said, arguing the volume of payments in the economy could grow by two to four orders of magnitude as agents transact on behalf of people and each other. "Agents are going to become one of the most, if not the most, important financial actors in the global economy."
Natural says it isn't only building agent checkout for consumer purchases; it's rethinking core payment infrastructure end to end, including how disputed or erroneous agent-initiated transactions get resolved — a problem existing chargeback systems weren't built to handle at machine speed or scale.
A crowded, fast-moving lane
Natural names Stripe as its primary competitor, but it isn't alone in racing to own the "agent commerce" layer. DCVC-backed Skyfire Systems is pursuing a similar problem using USD-backed stablecoins for agent-to-agent transactions, and major processors have been rolling out their own agentic-checkout pilots this year.
The bet underlying Natural's raise mirrors a broader theme in enterprise AI this quarter: as agents move from chat assistants into systems that take real-world actions — booking, purchasing, vendor payments — the infrastructure layer beneath them (identity, memory, and now money movement) is becoming its own funding category, distinct from the model layer itself.
