Score breakdown
This agent leads its categoryResearchers, students and analysts who need trustworthy, citation-backed answers over a specific corpus of documents rather than the open web
Key features
- Source-grounded chat over uploaded PDFs, Docs, Slides, web pages, YouTube videos and pasted text
- Inline citations that link every claim back to the source passage
- Audio Overviews — a generated two-host audio discussion of your sources
- Video Overviews, mind maps, flashcards and quizzes generated from the same corpus
- Deep Research and agentic source discovery to find and add relevant material
- Code execution in a secure cloud sandbox for analysis over your own data
- Notebook sync across the Gemini app, with AI Mode in Google Search rolling out
- Workspace admin controls for turning the product on or off per organizational unit
Strengths
- +Answers are grounded strictly in the sources you upload, with inline citations back to the exact passage
- +Unusually generous free tier — 100 notebooks, 50 sources each, plus Audio and Video Overviews at no cost
- +Audio Overviews turn a document pile into a listenable two-host discussion, which genuinely speeds up review of dense material
- +Now runs code in a secure cloud sandbox for data analysis grounded in your own files
- +Huge, proven user base — Google reports 30M+ users and 600,000+ organizations
Weaknesses
- −Cannot be bought on its own: every paid tier is bundled inside a Google AI subscription, Workspace plan or Cloud licence
- −Newest capabilities (code execution, agentic source discovery) land on Ultra and Workspace tiers first, with Pro following weeks later
- −Deliberately narrow — it will not reason freely beyond your uploaded sources the way a general assistant will
- −The July 2026 rename from NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook, plus overlapping Notebooks inside the Gemini app, makes the product boundary confusing
Overview
Overview
Gemini Notebook is Google’s source-grounded research assistant. Launched in 2023 as NotebookLM out of Google Labs, it was renamed Gemini Notebook on 16 July 2026 as Google folded it into the wider Gemini ecosystem — notebooks now sync with the Gemini app, with AI Mode in Google Search following. The core idea has not changed: instead of answering from the open web, the assistant answers only from the sources you give it — PDFs, Google Docs and Slides, web pages, YouTube transcripts, pasted notes — and cites the exact passage behind every claim.
That constraint is the product’s main virtue. Because retrieval is limited to a corpus you control, hallucination risk drops sharply and every answer is auditable, which is why it has found real traction with students, analysts, lawyers and journalists. Google reported more than 30 million users and 600,000+ organizations at the time of the rename. Beyond Q&A, it generates study and comprehension artifacts from the same corpus: Audio Overviews (a synthetic two-host discussion), Video Overviews, mind maps, flashcards and quizzes. The June 2026 update added a secure cloud computer that writes and runs code against your sources, turning it into a lightweight analysis tool as well as a reading one.
The awkwardness is commercial and structural rather than technical. There is no standalone paid Gemini Notebook subscription — paid limits arrive bundled inside Google AI Plus ($4.99/month after a June 2026 price cut), Pro ($19.99/month), Ultra (from $99.99/month), or a qualifying Workspace or Google Cloud licence. New capabilities tier down slowly, reaching Ultra and Workspace customers first. And the rename, alongside a separate Notebooks feature inside the Gemini app, leaves the product boundary genuinely murky. It is also, by design, not a general assistant: ask it something outside your sources and it will decline.
Key Benefits
- Auditable answers: Inline citations tie every statement to a source passage, so claims can be checked rather than trusted.
- Low hallucination surface: Grounding in a fixed corpus removes most of the failure modes of open-web assistants.
- Genuinely useful free tier: 100 notebooks and Audio Overviews at no cost make it usable without any subscription.
- Comprehension artifacts: Audio and Video Overviews, mind maps and quizzes turn dense material into something you can actually absorb.
Use Cases
- Literature and document review — Load dozens of papers or reports and interrogate them as a single, citation-backed corpus.
- Due diligence and contract reading — Ask targeted questions across a deal or policy folder and trace each answer to its clause.
- Study and onboarding — Generate flashcards, quizzes and audio walkthroughs from course material or internal handbooks.
- Grounded data analysis — Use the code sandbox to compute over spreadsheets and datasets attached to a notebook.
