Our verdict

7.5/10

n8n (7.5) wins on capability and value: unlimited free self-hosting and real code when you need it. Lindy (7.1) is the best no-code option for email, calendar and phone work. Gumloop, Relevance AI and Zapier Agents are solid but lose points on cost predictability or complex-task performance.

AgentScoreFromFree tierBest for
n8n7.5/10Free (self-hosted)Technical teams and developers who want flexible, self-hostable workflow automation with full code-level control and LLM integration
Lindy7.1/10$29.99/moSolopreneurs and small teams wanting no-code AI agents to automate email, CRM updates, and phone workflows without an engineering team.
Gumloop6.8/10FreeOperations and marketing teams wanting to automate AI-driven tasks without writing code
Relevance AI6.6/10$19/moOps and revenue teams that want to assemble multi-agent workflows across their existing SaaS stack without hiring engineers
Zapier Agents6.5/10FreeNon-technical teams already using Zapier who want to layer AI autonomy onto an existing automation stack

The short answer: if you have a developer or are comfortable self-hosting, choose n8n (7.5/10, free self-hosted, cloud from $24/month). If you want no-code agents for inbox, CRM and phone workflows, choose Lindy (7.1, from $29.99/month, no permanent free plan). If your team already lives in Zapier, Zapier Agents (6.5, free plan) is the lowest-friction way to add AI, but it is the weakest value of the five.

Quick picks

  • Best overall, and best for technical teams: n8n, 7.5, free self-hosted, cloud from $24/month.
  • Best no-code agent builder for solo operators: Lindy, 7.1, from $29.99/month.
  • Best visual canvas for AI pipelines: Gumloop, 6.8, free plan, Solo $37/month.
  • Best for multi-agent "workforce" teams: Relevance AI, 6.6, free plan, Pro from $19/month billed annually.
  • Best if you already use Zapier: Zapier Agents, 6.5, free plan, Agents Pro about $33/month.

"AI automation" now covers two jobs: deterministic workflows that call an LLM at one or two steps, and agents that decide their own next step. We scored five tools from the automation category on the same five criteria (see our methodology). Scores are computed from sub-scores, not editorial preference, and none of these vendors has any relationship with this site.

The ranking

  1. n8n — 7.5. Best for developers who want control and low cost.
  2. Lindy — 7.1. Best no-code agents for email, calendar and calls.
  3. Gumloop — 6.8. Best drag-and-drop canvas for AI-heavy pipelines.
  4. Relevance AI — 6.6. Best for multi-agent teams across a SaaS stack.
  5. Zapier Agents — 6.5. Best for existing Zapier users, with the widest app library.

1. n8n: best for technical teams

n8n is a fair-code workflow platform with 400+ integrations and native AI agent nodes. The self-hosted Community Edition is free with unlimited executions, and you can drop JavaScript or Python into any node, which removes the dead end that pure no-code tools hit. Agent nodes support multi-agent chaining, approval gates and configurable memory with standard LLM providers. It scores 9/10 for value, the highest in this list.

Watch out for: ease of use is 6/10. Large workflows get cluttered and are tedious to debug, and agent nodes are stateless by default, so persistent memory needs an external database. Cloud pricing jumps from Pro (about $60/month, 10,000 executions) straight to Business ($800/month, 40,000 executions). The license is fair-code, not OSI-approved open source, so you can't resell n8n as a managed service.

Skip it if: nobody on your team is comfortable with APIs, JSON and a bit of code.

2. Lindy: best no-code agents

Lindy builds agents from plain-language instructions, with 3,000+ app integrations, an HTTP action for anything else, human-escalation routing and SOC 2 Type II compliance (HIPAA with a signed BAA on Enterprise). Agent Swarms run many sub-agents in parallel for jobs like lead enrichment, and its Gaia phone agent handles voice workflows. It has the strongest ease-of-use score (7) among the agent-first tools that also score 8 on capability.

Watch out for: value scores 6/10. There is no permanent free plan, the entry Plus tier is $29.99/month for 3,000 credits that don't roll over, and Swarms need Pro ($99.99/month, 15,000 credits). Voice calls cost extra: $0.19/minute plus $10/month per phone number. Costs are hard to forecast at volume.

Skip it if: you need a free tier or predictable per-run pricing.

3. Gumloop: best visual AI canvas

Gumloop treats model calls as native nodes, so you can mix GPT, Claude and Gemini in one pipeline, and scraping and PDF parsing are built in. Its Gummie assistant generates a workflow graph from a plain-language description. Ease of use is 8/10, tied for best here, and there is a free plan with 2,000 credits a month. Paid plans start at $37/month (Solo, 10,000 credits).

Watch out for: support scores 5/10, the lowest here, and the free plan is community-only. Credits don't roll over and escalate quickly with AI-heavy runs. The trigger library is thin compared with Zapier or Make, and complex branching is awkward compared with n8n.

Skip it if: you need many event triggers or deep conditional logic.

4. Relevance AI: best for multi-agent teams

Relevance AI's Workforce canvas lets specialized agents hand work to each other, rather than running isolated bots. It offers 2,000+ integrations, runs across OpenAI, Anthropic and Google models, and includes a real free tier (200 Actions a month). Pro is $19/month billed annually ($29 monthly). Vendor Credits are billed at wholesale model cost with no stated markup. For prospecting use cases, see our best AI sales agents ranking.

Watch out for: two meters (Actions and Vendor Credits) make bills hard to forecast, and Team overages are $80 per 1,000 extra Actions. "No-code" oversells it once you need custom API calls or branching. Reliability and support both score 6/10, and the review base is thin.

Skip it if: you want predictable costs or a mature community to lean on.

5. Zapier Agents: best for existing Zapier shops

Zapier Agents connects to 7,000+ apps, the widest library of any tool here, with a choice of OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini or open-source models per agent. It has the highest ease-of-use score (8) alongside Gumloop, a free plan with no card, draft/published versioning and guardrails such as prompt-injection detection and PII scrubbing.

Watch out for: it has the lowest capability (6) and value (5) scores. Agents are billed separately from Zaps, Chatbots and Interfaces, pricing is per activity, and complex multi-decision workflows underperform purpose-built agent platforms. Agents Pro is about $33/month.

Skip it if: your processes are complex or high-volume, or you're not already on Zapier.

Which should you choose?

  • If you have engineering help or care about data control, choose n8n and self-host it.
  • If you're a solo founder or small team automating email, CRM and calls, choose Lindy.
  • If your workflows are mostly scraping, documents and LLM steps, choose Gumloop.
  • If you want several agents collaborating across your SaaS tools, choose Relevance AI.
  • If you already run hundreds of Zaps and want to add a little autonomy, choose Zapier Agents.

Whichever you pick, start with one narrow, low-risk workflow and keep a human approval step on anything that sends messages or changes records. Researchers are working on making this cheaper to run: see MIT and Microsoft's Murakkab. If you're unsure an agent is the right tool at all, read choosing the right AI agent.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best AI workflow automation tool in 2026?

On our scores, n8n (7.5/10) leads, followed by Lindy (7.1) and Gumloop (6.8).

Is n8n really free?

The self-hosted Community Edition is free with unlimited executions and all 400+ integrations, but you pay for hosting and maintenance. n8n Cloud starts at $24/month for 2,500 executions.

What is the best no-code AI automation tool?

Lindy scores highest among no-code agent builders. Gumloop and Zapier Agents are the easiest to learn (8/10 for ease of use), and both have free plans.

Why are AI automation tools so hard to budget?

Most bill by credits, actions or activities rather than flat seats, and AI-heavy steps burn more. Lindy, Gumloop, Relevance AI and Zapier Agents all use usage-based meters, while n8n bills by workflow execution, or nothing if self-hosted.

Do I need an AI agent or a normal workflow?

If the steps are always the same, a deterministic workflow with an LLM at one step is cheaper and more reliable. Use an agent only when the next step genuinely depends on judgment.
